I began my fiction career writing short stories or, more correctly, rewriting biblical narratives from the Old Testament. As you perhaps know, the biblical stories are sparse which lends them to imaginative interpretations. But what’s important about these narratives is that they survived for thousands of years through oral transmission. There was something enlightening about them to stimulate repetition again and again around the communal campfire. I found these stories not only compelling but worthy of expansion.
As a practicing rabbi, the synagogue provided me with many opportunities to tell stories from the pulpit. I found my congregants not only enjoyed listening, but remembered my narratives for many years. Between Men was written shortly after the Six Days War, when I was a rabbi serving in London.
